Monto Mani is currently a Professor with the Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST) and Department of Design & Manufacturing (CPDM) at the Indian Institute of Science. His research deals with Sustainability science, an interdisciplinary domain, focusing both on its theoretical basis, and application in architecture (buildings) and design. His Sustainability and Design lab (SuDesi http://cst.iisc. ac.in/sudesi/) comprises multi-disciplinary researchers examining sustainability in buildings, renewables, product design and manufacturing. His research into sustainability dates to 1996 when he explored the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for sustainable urban planning. He is an Architect, with a master’s in Civil Engineering. His PhD in sustainability, the first at IIT Madras, formulated a systems-framework identifying attitude as a critical determinant of sustainability. He authored a book on sustainability and human settlements way back in 2005. He was recently awarded the Amulya and Vimala Reddy Lecture Award 2024 for his contributions to sustainable development.
